Tragopan caboti

Identification

Male c. 61 cm (24 in); female 50 cm (19¾ in)

  • Black head
  • Orange orbital skin
  • Reddish-orange crest
  • Pale buff underparts
  • Maroon red with spotted buff upperparts

Female is mottled black and rufous brown above with whitish patches; belly is greyish brown with large white markings.

Distribution

Southeast China: Resident in Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Hunan, Guangdong, Guangxi and Fujian.

Taxonomy

Subspecies

There are 2 subspecies[1]:

  • T. c. caboti:
  • Foothill forests of south-eastern China
  • T. c. guangxiensis:
  • South East China (north-eastern Guangxi Zhuangu Autonomous Region)

Habitat

Coniferous or broadleaved foothill forests.

Behaviour

Cautious and secretive, feeds on forest floor or in trees. Descends to the ground before dawn, and back to dwelling trees at dusk with male flying up first and female following suit.

Diet

It would appear that, in the winter, they go to areas rich in nuts.

Vocalisation

Territorial call consists of repeated rapid burst of 5-25 notes lasting 2-8 seconds, diminishing in pitch and volume. Also utters sharp, repeated notes as "summons" calls.
