25–30 cm (9¾-11¾ in)
Brown above, rufous below, darkest on belly, flanks and undertail-coverts barred blackish-brown. Bill black, legs olive.

Distribution

South America: found in eastern Colombia and Venezuela south to Southern Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay and northern Argentina.

There are 9 subspecies^[1]:

C. o. castaneus:

Tropical easterb Colombia to eastern Ecuador and northern Peru

C. o. ochraceiventris:

Subtropical central Peru (Huánuco to Cuzco)

C. o. traylori:

Subtropical south-eastern Peru (Marcapata Valley of Cuzco)

C. o. punensis:

Extreme south-eastern Peru and yungas of northern Bolivia

C. o. cerviniventris:

Northern Venezuela

C. o. knoxi:

Subtropical north-western Venezuela

C. o. griseiventris:

North-central Brazil (Santarém region along Rio Tapajós )

C. o. hypochraceus:

South-western Brazil (upper Río Madeira in Rondônia)

C. o. obsoletus:

Eastern Paraguay to south-eastern Brazil and extreme north-eastern Argentina (Misiones)

Habitat

Atlantic forest and dense scrub on mountain ridges at 1,200-2,200m.

Behaviour

Diet

There is very little information, but they are known to eat seeds.

Breeding

They make a nest at the base of a tree. The clutch contains 4-5 eggs, which are pink to dark reddish or chocolate-brown.

Movements

Resident.

Vocalisation

Voice: A dull whistle.
