Identification

55 cm (21¾ in)

  • Grey head and throat, small red wattle on throat
  • Dark brown body with grey speckles on breast and belly
  • Rufous terminal band on tail
  • Grey bill
  • Pink legs

Distribution

South America: found locally in the Andes of southern Ecuador (but not on the east slope) and in the western Andes of northwestern Peru.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Subspecies inexpectata is usually considered invalid[2]

Bearded Guan is considered by some to be a subspecies of Band-tailed Guan[2]

Habitat

Both humid and dry montane cloud forests.

Behaviour

Diet

Their main diet consists of fruit, with the addition of some leaves and flowers.
