- Black crown, back, tail and breast band
- Red throat and bell
- Yellow eye patch
- White rump
- Very thick and yellow large bill, well developed clump of bristles at the base

West Africa: found in western Sahel (northern Senegambia to north-western Central African Republic)

Habitat
Woodland, thickets and orchards in dry areas, and gardens.
Behaviour
Diet
The diet includes fruit. The young are fed insects.
Breeding
It nests in a tree hole which it excavates using its large bill. Incubation of the 2 white eggs lasts for 15 days. The young fledge after 40 days.
Vocalisation
The call is a growling scrawk.
