    Here are two juveniles with yellow beaks squabbling, and here is another with some yellow on the beak but beginning to darken. If it's on a coastal island then it probably improves the chances of Chinese Egret. But I don't think I could rule out one or the other based on my limited knowledge.

    Thanks, that's a nice idea - I will try that. It has recently been removed from a national list and from (at least) one of the local lists hence the idea that it's been extirpated. There have also not been records on eBird or Chinese checklists.

    You might be right, I don't have much insight into how many disagreements there could be. In the last big update it was mentioned subspecies weren't being looked at yet but perhaps they'll go with one current reference as the default.

    Yes. Also the 2024 is for species-level agreement I suspect. I think a second stage would be subspecies-level which would take some time.

    Yes. Last year they said "Expect future updates to occur annually in October/November." There's a draft species list from July. And species and subspecies are now available for comparison on Avibase (which I would expect to be close or identical to final once it's officially published).
