    White-eye identification in Taipei

As no-one else has replied I'll give it a shot. Happy for others to weigh-in. The expected subspecies seem to be Zosterops japonicus japonicus and Zosterops simplex simplex. Swinhoe's is much more commonly reported but Warbling is possibly overlooked. Swinhoe's (e.g. here and here) tends to...

    Juv Chinese Egret?China

Here are two juveniles with yellow beaks squabbling, and here is another with some yellow on the beak but beginning to darken. If it's on a coastal island then it probably improves the chances of Chinese Egret. But I don't think I could rule out one or the other based on my limited knowledge.

    Afghan Babblers?

I think this is difficult and probably more research is needed. Likely overlap in sizes. See A partial revision of the Asian babblers (Timaliidae). The location is within the Afghan Babbler range but I feel that a line had to drawn somewhere and I cannot find the literature that supports this...

    Juv Chinese Egret?China

As no-one else has commented I'll say something to get a discussion going. For photos 1 2 3, I think Little Egret is a possibility and statistically more likely than Chinese Egret but I'm not familiar with Chinese Egret in the field let alone juveniles so I cannot rule it out. Perhaps there's...

    Audio song ID- Bangkok, Thailand

I think Plain Prinia is a possibility. Compare with ML182243391 - Plain Prinia - Macaulay Library and ML613111704 - Plain Prinia - Macaulay Library. Not perfect matches for speed and pitch but fairly close. Someone with experience in Bangkok might be able to say if there's anything similar. (I...

Japanese white-eye, lowland white-eye or something else?

There were taxonomic changes in recent years. It wasn't the simplest mapping and many subspecies were shuffled around. I think these are the expected species and subspecies: Swinhoe's White-eye (previously part of Japanese White-eye): Zosterops simplex simplex Warbling White-eye (previously...

Chinese population of Dusky Eagle Owl - Ketupa coromanda

Thanks, that's a nice idea - I will try that. It has recently been removed from a national list and from (at least) one of the local lists hence the idea that it's been extirpated. There have also not been records on eBird or Chinese checklists.

Chinese population of Dusky Eagle Owl - Ketupa coromanda

I'm trying to find more about Ketupa coromanda in China. I have read that it was found in Jiande 建德, Zhejiang and Nanchang 南昌, Jiangxi. I believe that it's thought to have been extirpated from both these areas (and hence from China). I can find little other information about it. I am interested...

Alcippe sp. Song ID - David's Fulvetta? Guangxi, China

Hi Mike. It is possible to separate these based on sound but unfortunately in this case it is not definitive. Your recording is a type I sound for Alcippe meaning a whistle without any overtones and without subsequent harmonic sounds (following classification from Tang, 2021). All three Guangxi...

    Clements 2023 Checklist Update

You might be right, I don't have much insight into how many disagreements there could be. In the last big update it was mentioned subspecies weren't being looked at yet but perhaps they'll go with one current reference as the default.

    Clements 2023 Checklist Update

Yes. Also the 2024 is for species-level agreement I suspect. I think a second stage would be subspecies-level which would take some time.

No eBird Taxonomy update this year (2022)?

Yes. Last year they said "Expect future updates to occur annually in October/November." There's a draft species list from July. And species and subspecies are now available for comparison on Avibase (which I would expect to be close or identical to final once it's officially published).

HBWAlive Key; mission accomplished or mission impossible?

There's a detailed reasoning here linking 'shanhu' to Pterorhinus chinensis. There are 4 variations on the characters noted through various historical documents: 山呼 - mountain calling - self-explanatory. 珊瑚 - coral - supposedly because it was considered precious. The bird was used for singing...

HBWAlive Key; mission accomplished or mission impossible?

I got a quick response from a Chinese birdwatcher: 珊瑚鳥/珊瑚鸟 is likely a substitution of characters for the more common name 山呼鸟 "shanhuniao" meaning "mountain calling bird". It may have referred to more than one species. That said, a quick search does confirm its association with Pterorhinus...

HBWAlive Key; mission accomplished or mission impossible?

Hi James. Thanks for the reply. That's great about the update to The Key (btw, I go by Nat Panda). And your comments are thoughtful regarding other meanings of "coral" (or indeed the wide range of possible colours). I hadn't actually thought of the cheeks but that's also possible. And thank you...

HBWAlive Key; mission accomplished or mission impossible?

Hello, I was just looking at the shanhu/shanbu discussion. I wonder if the following is relevant (or perhaps already known) - please let me know if I'm missing the point of the thread. From what I've read here '[Turdus] Shanhu/Shanbu' would be included in what we now call Pterorhinus chinensis -...

    Clements 2023 Checklist Update

Any thoughts on why Manipur Fulvetta is preferred over Streak-throated Fulvetta given most of the range of Fulvetta manipurensis is not in Manipur? I can see they type locality is Manipur so is that likely the reasoning?

Swinhoe's vs Indian White-eye (SW China)

Indeed, that's the big question. I have some correspondence from someone who studies these species. I will paraphrase and quote: [ID via song is not easy as the current public records are not sufficient and Swinhoe's doesn't appear to sing very often. "Swinhoe’s is the drabber, more olive...

Swinhoe's vs Indian White-eye (SW China)

Guizhou. Comfortably within the range for Swinhoe's but possibly in the range for Indian. Definite overlap of the species in NW Vietnam it seems. I think the most recent analysis suggests only Swinhoe's can be found in Guizhou but I'm not sure how definite that range is because both Indian an...

Swinhoe's vs Indian White-eye (SW China)

Can anybody tell me if it's possible to distinguish Swinhoe's White-eye (Zosterops simplex) from Indian White-eye (Zosterops palpebrosus)? I am in south-west of China and it seems the ranges could overlap.
