    Hen Harriers Cambrian mountains (wales)

Jude, if I've got this wrong, then I'm being really unfair to you, and sincere apologies in advance to someone who's developing an interest in birds, and trying to join in with others in this wonderful hobby. As always, birds' welfare comes before the interests of anyone posting here The thing...

    The Rise of the Phwitcher

Polite persuasion is the only way to stop this - most people respond to courtesy; confrontation tends to polarise opinion & gets nowhere The alternative is to ignore them - which implies that their behaviour is acceptable I don't like intervening either. Some years ago I approached an elderly...

Is avian taxonomy still dependent on ongoing specimen collection?

Very well said, Julian. The UK grew out of shooting vagrants a century ago. As for analysing the stomach contents (as reported by njlarsen), shooting the bird seems in some cases to be a way of saving money and/or effort. I would hope that Birdlife International would provide guidance on when...

Is avian taxonomy still dependent on ongoing specimen collection?

I was on the Birdquest trip to the Philippines (1993 ?) that discovered the Bukidnon Woodcock on Mount Kitanglad. In fact, I was standing next to the Swedish chap who accidentally flushed it. We immediately realised it was very likely a new species, because at the time there weren't any known...

Hi Bun, Sounds a good migrant trap for us to visit when we are down at Colyton at the end of next week. Looked on the map, but can't see a cemetery at Beer - could you give us directions? Thanks and good birding, John

Where for Barn Owl and Med Gull?

Thanks guys, Axe Estuary sounds a real gem. What a stroke of luck booking Colyton - we had no idea how good the area is for birds, we just booked it cos' it was central and available at Bank Holiday. Can't be all day birding as our 9 yo has to be entertained too, but look forward to getting out...

Where for Barn Owl and Med Gull?

Hi Just 2 weeks till our stay in Colyton in East Devon, and wondered if anyone could share any good places for Barn Owl and Med Gull. We intend to travel around a bit, so anywhere in East or South Devon would be do-able though somewhere more local for Barn Owl would probably be easier. Thanks!
