    Early Dawn Chorus

First I'm hearing of International Dawn Chorus Day! So glad to know it. Going to celebrate it this year. Woke to a White-throated Sparrow almost singing his full song in my Colorado backyard. Somewhat uncommon here -- usually, a small number overwinter and a few stop by during migration...

What is your favorite backyard bird?

Spotted Towhees are year-round residents of many yards in the suburbs around Denver. It's amazing to be able to see such large, boldly marked, and noisy sparrows every day of the year. In the winter, I'll occasionally have a half-dozen around.

    Your Most Recent "Life" Bird

Arizona Woodpecker, Tucson area. Last of lifers on an AZ trip last July, common enough but didn't show up until my friend and I spoke the bird (and our frustration for not seeing one yet) into existence.

    Greetings from a Colorado birder!

Love it! My favorite species. A few summers ago, I was lucky to have some good size flocks visiting my town before autumn migration. A few nights in a row, there'd be three or four dozen hunting over parks and streets. One even spent a morning perched on a store's sign at a mall. Sadly, I didn't...

    Your silliest/most entertaining/unlikely birding accomplishments

Not at the same level of rarity as many of these stories, but I encountered an adult male Summer Tanager this past autumn in the suburbs of Denver...while slowly trying to walk off a back injury, meandering up my neighborhood road in sandals and without binoculars, in the t-shirt and shorts I...

    Greetings from a Colorado birder!

Hey there -- New to the forum. I'm a Denver, Colorado, USA, area birder, gardener, and writer. I have a bit of a preoccupation (okay, obsession) with the Nightjar family. I'm counting the days until the return of Common Poorwills and Nighthawks to Colorado. And I'm writing a book about...
