    Spectrogram/sonogram viewing on tablet/smartphone

I'm considering getting a tablet for viewing sonograms when I'm on field trips away from wifi (and mains for that matter!). I'm looking for an app that will read a pre-recorded sound file (rather than produce real-time spectrograms from the internal mic). Here's my set-up: I record with an...

Id help - Mumbai [Whiskered Tern?]

I'm no Tern expert, Mihir, but looking at Collins and BWP, Gull-Billed Tern seems to tick most boxes; adult-winter, which fits with the date you took the picture. My maps only go as far as Arabia, does their range stretch to India?

unidentified sound at Threave Estate, Castle Douglas, UK

Whilst sitting in the Hide at Lamb island on Friday 15th, I was intrigued by the attached sound. I presume a bird was the source but I couldn't see it. The only candidate seen was a redhead Goosander ( Common Merganser · Mergus merganser) alone on the river. The closest I could find on the xeno...

Bird ID please - Chiffchaff maybe?

Yes, KenM, I'm interested in the song/call too. Presumably it wasn't a Willow Warbler song cos that would've stood out a mile. Was it a call instead, as AllanM asked? If so, MusicMan, I'd suggest you have a listen on xeno-canto and tell us which of Chiffchaff & WW "huit" calls sound closer. If...

Nikon ED60 iiia fieldscope should I get the 30x eyepiece?

I agree. IMO, the decision comes down to get a 30x, like it a lot, stop using the 24x get a 40x (MC or DS until an MC shows up ) to complement the 24x So the question almost becomes "how much will you like your 24x when you've got higher mag?"! For me, the answer was "not much". Pretty much...

Nikon ED60 iiia fieldscope should I get the 30x eyepiece?

Hi Emma, I also have an EDIIIA, which I use with a 24xDS, 40xDS (bought initially for digiscoping) , and 20-60x zoom. For distance viewing like you describe, I really like the 40xDS for the extra reach. I will occasionally switch to the zoom if I can't make a distant id with the fixed EP...

used Kowa TSN-663: a good lightweight scope?

I'm sure after a little while he'll start to get interested in a fixed wide. Do they come up very often 2nd-hand? (I know the Nikon 30xMC is very hard to come by) * just looked it up; it's cheap enough to get new!

used Kowa TSN-663: a good lightweight scope?

Thanks, Joachim. I gather it is the twist-up version. Is this zoom any good, in your opinion? PS. have you got a link for a new one at around £900. I can't find many actually in stock and all £950+ (inc case)
