    Spectrogram/sonogram viewing on tablet/smartphone

I'm considering getting a tablet for viewing sonograms when I'm on field trips away from wifi (and mains for that matter!). I'm looking for an app that will read a pre-recorded sound file (rather than produce real-time spectrograms from the internal mic). Here's my set-up: I record with an...

Id help - Mumbai [Whiskered Tern?]

I'm no Tern expert, Mihir, but looking at Collins and BWP, Gull-Billed Tern seems to tick most boxes; adult-winter, which fits with the date you took the picture. My maps only go as far as Arabia, does their range stretch to India?

unidentified sound at Threave Estate, Castle Douglas, UK

Whilst sitting in the Hide at Lamb island on Friday 15th, I was intrigued by the attached sound. I presume a bird was the source but I couldn't see it. The only candidate seen was a redhead Goosander ( Common Merganser · Mergus merganser) alone on the river. The closest I could find on the xeno...

Bird ID please - Chiffchaff maybe?

Yes, KenM, I'm interested in the song/call too. Presumably it wasn't a Willow Warbler song cos that would've stood out a mile. Was it a call instead, as AllanM asked? If so, MusicMan, I'd suggest you have a listen on xeno-canto and tell us which of Chiffchaff & WW "huit" calls sound closer. If...

Nikon ED60 iiia fieldscope should I get the 30x eyepiece?

I agree. IMO, the decision comes down to get a 30x, like it a lot, stop using the 24x get a 40x (MC or DS until an MC shows up ) to complement the 24x So the question almost becomes "how much will you like your 24x when you've got higher mag?"! For me, the answer was "not much". Pretty much...

Nikon ED60 iiia fieldscope should I get the 30x eyepiece?

Hi Emma, I also have an EDIIIA, which I use with a 24xDS, 40xDS (bought initially for digiscoping) , and 20-60x zoom. For distance viewing like you describe, I really like the 40xDS for the extra reach. I will occasionally switch to the zoom if I can't make a distant id with the fixed EP...

used Kowa TSN-663: a good lightweight scope?

I'm sure after a little while he'll start to get interested in a fixed wide. Do they come up very often 2nd-hand? (I know the Nikon 30xMC is very hard to come by) * just looked it up; it's cheap enough to get new!

I'm pretty sure it's the TE-9Z. Thanks for comparison to Opticron SDLv2

used Kowa TSN-663: a good lightweight scope?

Thanks, Joachim. I gather it is the twist-up version. Is this zoom any good, in your opinion? PS. have you got a link for a new one at around £900. I can't find many actually in stock and all £950+ (inc case)

used Kowa TSN-663: a good lightweight scope?

I just asked this question on this thread. Posting a link here in hope that Kowa experts can give some opinions on this or similar Kowa scopes (hope this doesn't break some etiquette!)

used Kowa TSN-663: a good lightweight scope?

A mate of mine has recently decided he wants to get a scope. He's in Italy so has little opportunity to follow the advice of "try before you buy". After dozens of emails he's narrowed himself down to a c60mm with a zoom. This fits his constraints: he travels by scooter so wants to keep weight...

Birds of Prey at Cannock Chase

We took a visiting friend a tour of the north section of Cannock Chase yesterday morning. In addition to seeing buzzards and kestrels (and hearing a sparrowhawk), we encountered two birds of prey we weren't at all sure about*. What other birds of prey are reasonably likely on Cannock Chase at...

Attached are 2 brief snatches of bird song recorded last week (21/06/15) from a footpath here. The bird was singing from low growing gorse on a coastal headland. It sounded warbler-like (maybe subsong) to my ears, but I can't think of any such species that would favour that habitat (there were...

To Anglesey & back via North Wales

Hope, unlike me, you read about Penmon Point before you get back; I'd have liked to have added Eiders to my list of fab birds for the trip! If you do take yourself up the Llyn Cowlyd (#36) road, the end of the track where the stream is is a delight in good weather, a very fine Redstart parades...

A quick report Got back late last night exhilarated but knacked from 3days of trying to squeeze too much birding in the day! We caught up with Guillemots, some Razorbills and just the one Puffin at South Stack, thanks to advice given here and a RSPB volunteer. The high winds on Fri & Sat...

To Anglesey & back via North Wales

Thanks should go to James, John et al, for the generous field info. If you don't already have it, I'd also recommend Alan Davies book. I have the Solway book from the same series; this has same format but Davies writing is better - full of useful fieldcraft. (PS. Link is cheaper than online...

Thanks for extra info, James, and useful to be reassured on the Gronant terns, John. My copy of Davies' "where to watch" book has just arrived (thanks to excellent service from BirdersStore in Worcs) so I'm busy making lists! Looks like I need to plan a winter visit too....
