Middle Spotted Woodpecker

Middle Spotted Woodpecker (Dendrocoptes medius)

I first saw it being driven away by the larger Eurasian Green Woodpecker. The bird was pretty cooperative and perched still, so I took twenty-odd closeups only to discover that somehow I could tell the woodpecker from the tree on just two of those. This is the sharper one. My first for this patch.

I used to think they could only be seen in mature deciduous forests (and that's where I'd seen all my previous MSWs), so I was pleasantly surprised to notice that one on the fringe of a glorified pine plantation. There is a connection with a bigger forest, though.

Today I got one in a small city park pretty much accidentally, without even looking for it (actually, it found me). Perhaps they're locally having a sort of a bumper year.
