A unexpected encounter yesterday morning.
This species was never documented before in this little preserved area I go birding near my town. So this was a lifer for me and for this little natural reserve.
Saw it from a distance, in a huge tree, and it only stayed for a quick couple shots, which weren't very good ones. Very shy animal.
Its a big hawk, way bigger than the usual roadside hawks I see all over the place here, but looks kinda wierd, has a small head compared to the body, long legs and claws.
It uses it to hunt for animals hidden in the tree trunks, holes, bromelias, and other places animals hide during the day up the big trees. Little marsupials, bats, lizards, etc.. but also hunt birds.
Very interesting species.
