Northern Rough-winged Swallow
Easy to overlook in flocks of other more well-marked swallows, this species likes to sweep low over water catching insect one after another. The name "rough-winged" refers to tiny hooks on the leading edge of their outermost primary (wing) feather formed by stiff barb tips. These tips are hooked in males and straight in females. This unique feature produces a faint sound during courtship and territorial chases, but its function is otherwise unknown. The race breeding in this part of Texas is "S. s. psammochrous" characterized by paler crown and rump. The widespread nominate race replaces it in East Texas. Formerly lumped with the Southern Rough-winged Swallow under the name "S. ruficollis" but split in 1983.
