Holidays in NE Argentina (Day 1)

First day of my summer holidays. After 12 hs traveling by bus I arrived with three friends of mine to the city of Posadas (capital city of province Misiones in NE Argentina). There we hired a 4x4 pick up with driver an went west to the city of Ituzaingo (north of province of Corrientes) stopping at every nice place and at the Rincon de Santa Maria provincial reserve. The weather was very hot (40+ degrees Celsius with very high humidity). These were the new addition to my year list during the day:

On the second day we decided to spend the day at the Estancia San Juan de Poriahú, which lies aproxmately 70 Km SW of the city Ituzaingo. This Estancia lies in the NW part of Iberá marshland. It's really an incredible place for water birds. The only problem for us was the summer heat and how dry every places was. But it was an excellent day. We saw Capibaras, Caymans and Marsh-Deer. The third day we moved around near the city of Ituzaingo visiting the Rincon de Santa Maria province reserve and the Estancia Puerto Valle. Both places lies 10 - 15 km east of Ituzaingo. In the case of the reserve we found a place dominated by grassland and the coast of the Paraná river small patched of forest. The estancia Puerto Valle dedicates to lumber Eucalyptus and Pine forest (both planted artificially) and to the farming of caymans. They have interesting patches of original forest at the coast of the Paraná river. These were the new addition to my year list during the day:

On the fourth day we decided to cross the province of Corrientes from the northern part on the beaches of the Paraná river to the NE part nearing the coast of the Uruguay river. In the middle we found the Iberá marshland and grassland. Also we saw and felt the very hot and dry summer in Iberá. Temperatures went up to 40 degrees celsius. But also we could see the Pampas deer. That was for me a lifer!!! We ended the day a the town of Virasoro. About birds, these were the new addition to my year list during the day:

On the fifth day the trip continues to the coast of the Uruguay river visiting grassland and small patches of forest on the coast of the river. Really a nice day visiting also small villages forgotten by all people (but not by themself). Normally we searched for the Prefectura control point (police of the waterways) to have an easier access of the forest at the coast. These were the new addition to my year list during the day:

The sixth day we decided to visit a Province Park advertised by a sign at an exit of the road between Apostoles and Concepción. It was called Parque Provincial de la Sierra Ing. Raul Martinez Crovetto. A secondary route enters between the hills and the atlantic forest to visit a smal park with very nice small falls. The route was not easy but on the other side the park was beautiful. We stayed there during the day and in the afternoon we drove out of the park and again in the direction of the Paraná river. There we went to the Estancia Campo San Juan and it's private reserve of 2000 hectar around the main buildings. Nice place with excellent sight over the Paraná river. Finished the day with a great asado and wine. The heat and being wet with your own transpiration is beginning to be confortable. Every day the same sauna. Holidays in NE Argentina (Day 7)

On this day we walked around the reserve of Campo San Juan. Lost one groupmember on the afternoon, because he must go back to work. On the reserve we through grassland and atlantic forest. Also we found a nice swimming pool to refresh against the nearly 40 degrees Celsius plus a nice view over the Paraná river. Late in the afternoon we drove to another reserve: Yagouroundi. This one lies in the center of the province Misiones near the town of San Pedro (15 km away). These were the new addition to my yearlist this day at Campo San Juan:

First of all I must add another species for day 5 because I checked my my photos last week and noticed a picture of a Common Nighthawk. In this case I must add it to my year list:

On Sunday 12th we continued walking around the Yaguaroundi reserve. It's really a nice place. On midday we changed course driving back to Aristobulo del Valle. There we saw going home another member of the group with the pickup. So we must continue moving with taxis. At Aristobulo del Valle we visit the Salto Encantado province park. This park lies 10 km away from the town and has an easy access. Mainly you'll find two beautiful waterfalls and some tracks to walk around in the forest. This were the addition to my yearlist:

Today I lost the last member of our group and I continued my holidays at Salto Encantado Province Park. The days continues hot and without rain but with a lot of humidity inside the forest. This were the addition to my yearlist:

Holidays in NE Argentina (Day 12)

15/Feb/2006
Day off! Traveled late in the morning from Aristobulo del Valle to San Pedro by local bus. Arrived there in the afternoon. No birdwatching activities for me. Used the day to recover sleep. Rained for the first time in 12 days.
