    Greater/Lesser Scaup? -Kansas City

I'm relatively new to birding, but have had the pleasure of upping my waterfowl game this last week from the Gulf Coast and up the Missouri River valley. I got some great looks at Lesser Scaups around the Kansas City airport (spent an hour watching a dozen from shore with 16x binocs). A few...

This was taken off the dock a couple of days ago. I’m not sure if they are greater or lesser, any suggestions/information would be appreciated. Hope you enjoy the image

Greater Scaup or Tufted Duck, Gloucestershire UK

Hi all. Looking through some old records and found an observation that gave me pause. This grainy photo is a bird I originally identified as female Greater Scaup last year in Late July. I have had a lot of encounters with Scaup over the years, and for me the jizz of this bird was very scauplike...

    Waterfowl from Vogelplas Starrevaart, Netherlands

Hi everyone, Here are a few different duck/waterfowl species I photographed in mid-August in the Vogelplas Starrevaart (Netherlands) where I'd like to ask for or confirm my IDs on. The area is known for its high diversity of bird species. I believe it's likely that I was maybe in the "eclipse"...

Bolsa Chica ecological preserve, Huntington Beach, California (1/1/21 approx 3:30) Hi everyone I was wondering if someone could please help me with this ID. I’m leaning one way but I want to make sure. Is this a lesser or greater scaup? Thank you!

    Greater Scaup (male)

Taken at the Martin Luther King Jr. Regional Shoreline, Arrowhead Marsh (Oakland, CA, USA). At this particular nature area, Greater Scaups would be by far the most common ducks. But their wide variations in patterns based on age and gender makes them always a fun subject to photograph; always...

    Lesser Scaup

This duck was part of small group of Lesser Scaup, Ring-billed and Northern Shoveler ducks. This was on a small lake that for the last two has not been popular with migrants. I am glad to see them return.

    Greater Scaup (female)

Taken at the Martin Luther King Jr. Regional Shoreline. Greater Scaups are very plentiful here, and seem to overwinter the longest of all the seasonal migrants. So quite common in the winter, often in rafts of 2-3 dozen in places, even as spring gets started and only the local birds remain.

    Greater Scaup and Clark's Grebe

Taken at the Martin Luther King Jr. Regional Shoreline at about 60m. Greater Scaup (left, flapping) and Clark's Grebe (right). Scaups are plentiful here, but first time I've seen one: a) on land, and b) doing anything but swimming. The Clark's Grebe is also new to me, and I've never seen the...
