Birding tours in Hawaii in June?

Hi, In Mid-June to early July, I'm traveling to Kauai, Big Island, and Oahu with my teenage son who is a passionate birder. Any recommendations for endemic bird tours, local birding guides or specific places to go? I can't seem to find any tours that offer dates during that period of time.

    Short-billed Dowitcher ?? February 29, 2004 Hawaii

The bird in the foreground is slightly smaller than its companion. The bill is slightly shorter. The posture when feeding is not as football-ish. The loral angle is greater. The tail of this bird (on the left in the flight shot) is paler. Any thoughts will be appreciated. Thanks.

Dowitchers - Hawaiian Islands - Winter

Photos of 3 different Dowitchers. Iʻm having an awful time telling Short-billed from Long-billed Dowitchers. I didʻt hear any of them call. Any opinions will be appreciated. Thanks.

Storm Petrel ID - Hawaii - February

The tail seems too forked to be Band-rumped. Leachʻs perhaps. Any thoughts? The bird was confused by lights and came down onto the deck of a ship at night offshore of Kauai. Thanks.

    Best month to visit Hawaii?

Thinking of visiting Hawaii sometime in February or March, which is when many birders visit based on my research. However, given that Feb and March are among the rainiest months, I'm not sure how the constant rain would affect my birding experience. My plan is to focus on the endemics on Maui...

    Red-footed booby

This white morph variant was photographed at the north shore of Kauai island, near the Kilauea Lighthouse at Kilauea Point. The point is a wildlife refuge, and one of the top spots in the world to see them year round. Although the red feet are tucked in flight, this is one of the best pics I was...
  7. Hōlei Sea Arch

    Hōlei Sea Arch

This famous sea arch, rising as high as a 10 story building, and located at the coast of Volcano Nation Park on the big island, was carved by the aggressive waves of the Pacific Ocean as they pummel the lava rock cliffs.

    Hawaii, anytime 2022

Hello, I have just moved to Kauai to work on seabird conservation. I will be here until December 2022 or later and am interested in seeking all of the extant endemic birds of Hawaii (on Kauai, Oahu, Maui, and Hawaii Islands). Would be happy to plan weekend (maybe slightly longer) trip(s) to see...

Golden Plover Chick, Photo by Jean Tessmer Maui Hawaii

We call Golden Plovers "Kolea" in Hawaii, and know when winter is coming because we start seeing these in our yards. I'm told they are very precise in returning to their same local, right down to our yard instead of our neighbors. You only ever see one Kolea per yard. In the winter months, the...

    Warbling White-eye in the rain

Came across this sweet shot of a mejiro in the rain when we were at the Lelani Estates on the Big Island....two weeks before it all blew up in the Kiluea eruption a couple years back.
  14. Chestnut Munia

    Chestnut Munia

This species was previously known as the Chestnut or Black-headed Mannikin. Formerly lumped with Tricolored Munia (L. malacca), they were introduced in Hawaii in 1959 and are now established in all the main islands. The subspecies introduced in Hawaii appears to be L. a. jagori of the Philippine...
  15. Zebra Dove

    Zebra Dove

These small doves were often quite tame allowing close approach. We found them to be abundant in settled areas around towns and villages where they are sometimes fed. They were introduced from Singapore in 1922 and have since spread to all the main islands. Sexes are similar but I believe this...

    Hakalau Forest NWR

Pua Akala Tract of the Hakalau Forest NWR is NOT open to the public. It is a natural rainforest that was not planted by humans. It came back after the cattle industy ended on the mountain. Many of the trees here are over 1000 years old, and 95% of the the plants and birds are native to Hawaii...

    Hakalau Forest NWR

This is my favorite place in the world. I volunteer at least twice a year here replanting the native forest. We work hard for 2 days, then on day 3 , we are rewarded with a morning of birding before we go home.

    Taking a break

Learning to fly is a tough job. This juvenile Japanese White-eye was learning to fly from both it's parent. They were twittering loudly trying to get it's attention. It's so young it doesn't even have the white eye markings yet. It's was taking a rest on a Hapu fern.

    Mauna Kea Snow

Yes...it does snow in Hawaii. You can play in the cold in the morning ,then drive 35 miles to the beach in the afternoon. Look closely ...can you see the telescopes?
