    American Painted Lady - Scilly

Today apparently. Not sure how may previous records, but I’m guessing few… https://x.com/phillipwells22/status/1713230098768257170?s=46&t=EsQtDONboB28Y9dlT-klDQ

Whinchat or Stonechat? West Suffolk, yesterday.

I noticed this bird with naked eye, and an obvious adult male Stonechat, and assumed it was a female Stonechat. On a quick check with bins, I thought it was an immature male Stonechat. Later checking in the scope I began to think it was an immature Whinchat. Tail pattern not seen...

    Confirmation of Merlin sonogram. Crossbill?

Heard a very feint and distant ‘chip-chip-chip’ this afternoon, in the Brecks. When I looked down the Merlin app was saying Crossbill. Is there enough on these three marks to say either way?

    Hybrid Duck - U.K. (Blue-winged Teal x Teal?)

Had this Teal sized duck in Suffolk today. Best match I can find is Blue-winged Teal x Teal. Happy to have any other suggestions.

Strange gaps in British county lists.

I’ll start the ball rolling with Norfolk - Lesser Scaup and Red-eyed Vireo are strange gaps in the, very large, county list. As I live in Suffolk, I will have to think what the most glaring absences are, top of my head I’m thinking Bonaparte’s Gull. What other weird gaps are there in other...

    Tundra and Taiga?

These three birds are at RSPB Lakenheath, they were identified as Tundra. They looked like Tundra in build. From experience I ’ve found the bill pattern of Taiga to be more variable than Tundra. My question is on bill pattern. Can Tundra show a bill like nos. 1 & 2. No. 3 looks typical...

    BOURC 55th Report (January 2023)

    UK - Lang’s Short-tailed Blue

Was fortunate enough today, to be invited to see a Lang’s Short-tailed Blue that had entered a house in Berkshire a week or so ago. Also saw it get released. The house owners said they have not bought any legumes lately, and it seems this individual came in through an open window. A friend...

How many Raptor species in a day in U.K.?

Inspired by a count of 8 Raptor species yesterday near home, I got to wondering what is the best total of Raptor species seen in the U.K. in a single day. Maybe 14 is possible, in Scotland, but I suspect no one will have achieved that.

    Short squeaky call?

A mystery caller moving through the nettles behind the house this morning. A Sylvia like tack (which was not caught on the short video) and a short squeaky call. I wondered if it could be Garden Warbler, but I’m not confident. Calls twice on the video, once at the very beginning and again just...

Italy - Help with Rock Partridge & Snowfinch

I have to visit Rome at some time in the nearish future and wondered if anyone can help with the best time of year to see Rock Partridge and Snowfinch. I am assuming Abruzzo National Park is the best area, only a couple of hours from where we will be staying. Also is there such a thing as a...

    LWHG 2 - Suffolk UK

Whilst watching a different Gull, this paler mantled LWHG wandered into view. My perception was mantle colour as Argenteus HG, but the primary pattern made me think Argentatus. It could be: Argenteus with ‘thayeri’ wing pattern An exceptionally pale Argentatus A hybrid Argentatus x Argenteus...

Large White-headed Gull - Suffolk UK

Noticed this in a pig-field as it was a tone or two lighter than nearby, presumed graellsii LBBG’s. The pictures of it in the deck are closer to the mantle tone, flight shots are over exposed. Q/ is it possible to clinch Heuglin’s Gull in a British vagrancy context, without a ring? From what...

    Three Dunnocks.

Apologies if this has a thread already, but it’s news to me. (And a tick eventually) Anyone know if IOC are looking at this? It’s not on their website.

    Madeira exotics

I have a trip planned to Madeira in May 2022. Given the extremely small list of Bird species present, I wondered what, if any, established exotics might be found here, that would be countable in a WP context. I have a very limited target list so would be interested in anything else I can find...

    Hybrid/aberrant Duck - Cambs, U.K.

Meant to post this a few weeks ago when I saw it. Quite a perky little Duck, I’m guessing there may be some Yellow-billed Pintail in there, but I’m not really sure what it is.

    UK vintage mystery Phylosc challenge!

I will give more details, including photo credits, and my reason for posting, after there have been some opinions posted. This is not a trick question, though it is potentially quite tricky. I, for one, will not berate any wrong answers, in fact I was wrong at the time, as were most observers...

    Mallard eating Slow Worm

How common is this? Watched a female Mallard swallow, after about 10 attempts (it kept climbing back up her throat!) a Slow Worm, approx. 40cm long. She finally waded into the river outside my front door and drank some water to assist in washing it down. I always assumed that Mallards were...

    Tricky UK Falcon - 21/10/17

Posted this in Rare birds section, perhaps here would have been better, many views, no comments. Guess it really is tricky! A (little) bit of discussion on Twitter about this Falco found at Kessingland this afternoon. Surely there are some Raptor experts on here that would like to weigh in...

Posting these on behalf of a friend. These are the only shots. Taken in April in Texas. I think I am happy with what they are but a few other possibilities have been put forward. Whad'y'all think?

    Most 'Plastic' Patch award

At Walthamstow we have recorded 19 out of the 23 species on Cat C of the British List. I'm not sure we should be proud but I wonder if any other British patch can boast more? 1. Mute Swan Cygnus olor AC2 2. Greylag Goose Anser anser AC2C4E* 3. Snow Goose Anser caerulescens AC2E 4. Greater...
