Identification

85 cm

  • Black overall
  • White primaries
  • White flecking on neck, upper breast and wing-coverts
  • Bare orangey-red or purplish throat
  • Double-lobed dewlap
  • Blue bill with black tip
  • Purple facial skin around eye


Distribution

Dry forests of north-western Peru (Tumbes, Piura and Lambayeque).


Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Habitat

Dry wooded slopes and ravines, valleys with small permanent streams or waterholes, and equatorial dry deciduous forest with dense cover, desert scrub with cacti. Observed at heights around 29 m.

Behaviour

Diet

The diet includes bean, sweet potato and maize leaves also the fruit of coffee plants.

Breeding

They lay 2 or 3 eggs during the season of January to August.

Vocalisation

Voice: A deep, hoarse och..och...och, mostly heard at dawn and during breeding season.
Call: A sharp cau….cau….cau that can be heard over a long distance.
