Identification
Dark chestnut-brown above with blackish vermiculation on lower back and fine yellowish-white spots. Paler below with wider dark barring on flanks. Crown grey, throat white, head and neck grey with yellowish-white spots, undertail chestnut. Iris, bill and legs dark brown. Length 33cm.
Distribution
East Ecuador, south-east Colombia, south-west Venezuela, Peru, northern and central Bolivia and across Brazil to the Atlantic. Resident.
Taxonomy
This species is monotypic.[1]
Habitat
Lowland rainforest, roosts in trees.
Behaviour
Breeding: Polygamous, one or more females lay 10-12 glossy eggs in a scrape, covered with leaves when unattended. Incubation: c. 20 days by male, chicks buff with dark stripes, run soon after hatching and fly when half-grown.
Diet: Mainly animals taken from the ground layer.
Voice: Long mellow note followed by shorter one then after a pause a series of increasingly rapid notes of similar tone then the first two notes repeated.
