Identification
28–30 cm
- Underside brown with extensive white spotting
- Wings likewise
- Face mostly dark with whitish throat and supercilium
- Banded tail
- Eyes golden-yellow
Similar Species
During winter overlaps with Southern Boobook which may not be separable but has more greenish-yellow eyes and less richly colored underparts.
Distribution
Australia: Tasmania, wintering north to Victoria and possibly New South Wales.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
The species was formerly included in Morepork.
Habitat
Forest and other wooded habitats including gardens.
Behaviour
Food included invertebrates such as insects and small vertebrates.
Vocalisation
Most frequent vocalization is a double hoot where the second sound is lower or equal in pitch. These can be repeated very frequently and continue for a very long time (hours).
