Identification

Length: 25cm

Similar Species

Southern red-bellied race superficially resembles the Blue-crowned Trogon, but no overlap in range. The northern orange-bellied race can be confused with the White-tailed Trogon.

Distribution

South America: restricted to south-eastern Brazil, eastern Paraguay and far north-eastern Argentina.

Fairly common to uncommon. Found in most reserves in the region.

Subspecies

There are two subspecies^[1]:

• T. s. aurantius: orange belly

• Eastern Brazil (Minas Gerais to Rio de Janeiro and northern Sao Paulo)

• T. s. surrucura: has a red belly

• Southern Brazil to Paraguay, Uruguay and northern Argentina

The two may represent separate species.

Forest and woodland.

Behaviour

Although a colourful bird, it can easily be overlooked because of its habit of sitting quietly for long periods. Frugivorous.
