Identification
32 cm. Elongated blue and red neck feathers which become raised when excited or it feels threatened.
Distribution
Brazil, the Guianas, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and possibly Bolivia.
Taxonomy
Two subspecies are recognized, accipitrinus and fuscifrons.
Habitat
Lowland tropical forests and savanna. In some locations prefer areas near rivers.
Behaviour
It nests in holes in trees and stumps. 1-3 eggs are laid and incubated for between 26-28 days.
Its diet includes fruit.
