Red-and-blue Lory - BirdForum Opus

Identification

31 cm. Patterned, arboreal parrot. It is red, with an orange bill and a purplish-blue patch on mid- to hind crown and broad line from eye to mantle. The breast-band, mantle and back are purplish-blue. The scapulars, flight feathers and thighs are black. while the wing feathers are red and tipped with black. The tail is Reddish-purple. Voice: Short harsh chattering screeches

Taxonomy

Two subspecies are recognized:[1]

  • E. h. talautensis - Talaud Islands
  • E. h. histrio - Sangihi, Siau and Ruang Islands (north of Sulawesi)

Behaviour

It eats fruit and insects, as well as coconut nectar.

May-June is the breeding period and nests are made in holes in tall trees.
