Identification
22 cm.
- Red forhead, crown and lores to upper ear-coverts (to variable extent)
- Green rest of plumage, becoming yellowish on abdomen
- Dull blue primary-coverts, primaries, edges to outer wing-coverts and tail feathers
Female without red on head but with blue suffusion on breast and forehead.
Immature male with less red on head, immature female with less blue on wings.
Distribution
Southeast Brazil (southeast Bahia to Rio Grande do Sul, east Paraguay and northeast Argentina (Misiones).
Population reduced by extensive habitat loss but still common in Alto Paraná region, Paraguay or Misiones, Argentina.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
Habitat
Found in humid foothill forest up to 1500 m.
Behaviour
Diet
Poorly known. Seen feeding on fruits and seeds.
Breeding
Breeding recorded in November. The nest is placed in a tree hole. Lays 3 to 4 eggs.
Movements
Some movements between interior and coastal areas recorded, nomadic at Intervales State Park.
