Identification
42-52 cm (16½-20½ in). A terrestrial bird with a hump-backed appearance and a fairly long neck and legs.
- Uniform black plumage
- Dark green to olive-brown hind-wing patch
- Purple iridescence on lower throat
- Outer wing-coverts tipped in iridescent purple
- Green to olive bill and feet
- Subspecies differ in coloration, especially of hind-wing patch
Sexes similar. Juveniles similar to adults.
Similar species
Similar to Gray-winged Trumpeter but hind-wing patch darker and more extensive.
Distribution
South America: found only in Amazonian Brazil.
Widespread in suitable habitat.
Taxonomy
Forms superspecies with Gray-winged Trumpeter and Pale-winged Trumpeter.
Subspecies
There are 4 subspecies which are all sometimes elevated to full species.[1]
- P. v. viridis (Green-backed Trumpeter):
- Brazil south of the Amazon between Rio Madeira and Rio Tapajós
- P. v. dextralis (Dusky-backed Trumpeter):
- Eastern Brazil, south of the Amazon, between the Tapajós and Xingu rivers
- P. v. interjecta (Xingu Trumpeter):
- Eastern Brazil, south of the Amazon, between the Xingu and Tocantins rivers
- P. v. obscura (Black-backed Trumpeter):
- North-eastern Brazil south of the Amazon (north-eastern Pará east of Rio Tocantins)
Habitat
Humid lowland forests, usually far away from human settlement.
Occurs up to 800 m.
Behaviour
Diet
Known to feed on fruit, small vertebrates, arthropods and carrion. Follows sometimes army ant swarms to feed on insects disturbed by the ants.
Forages in groups of three up to 19 birds.
Breeding
Few information available.
Movements
A sedentary and probably territorial species.
