Identification

18cm

  • Chestnut head and back
  • Bright orange sides of face
  • Rufous upperparts with dark bars
  • White throat, black chest band
  • Yellowish belly
  • Bright orange iris, bill, and feet

Distribution

South America: found in south-easternColombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, Ecuador, eastern Peru, Bolivia and Amazonian Brazil.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Subspecies dugandi is not generally recognised[2].

Habitat

Humid forest, dry hills, bamboo bordering rivers.

Behaviour

Breeding

They nest in holes that they dig in sloping or flat ground.

Diet

The diet includes large insects and small vertebrates such as lizards, snakes, frogs.
