Identification

  • Green plumage
  • Large black wing patches
  • Dull yellow around eyes
  • Blue-grey beak
  • Brown eyes.

Distribution

Eastern Andes of western South America: found in Bolivia and Peru

Taxonomy

Subspecies[1]

There are 2 subspecies:

  • H. m. peruviana: dull turquoise head with dark ear coverts
  • Andes of central and southern Peru
  • H. m. melanotis: green head, blue neck band, dull red ear coverts
  • Andes of Bolivia (La Paz and Cochabamba)

Habitat

Montane forest.

Behaviour

The diet includes fruit.
