Identification
25cm (9¾ in)
- Green overall plumage
- Dark brownish-black cap
- Whitish scaly neck and breast
- Red upper wing coverts
- Dark breast feathers with light tips
- Black beak
Juvenile: duller; green primary coverts and carpal edges. White cere and bare white eye ring.
Distribution
South America: found from Peru to Bolivia and possibly the western edge of Brazil.
Taxonomy
Subspecies
There are 2 subspecies[1]:
- P. r. rupicola - central Peru.
- P. r. sandiae - SE Peru and N Bolivia.
Habitat
Humid lowland terra ferme and seasonally flooded forests and forest edges, less often in east Andean foothills up to 300m.
Behaviour
Diet
They have been observed feeding on fruits of cecropia trees, but there is little other information available.
