Selenidera spectabilis


36–38 cm (14-15 in)
Black underside except for yellow on flanks, chestnut thighs, and red undertail coverts. Upperside olive-green with slaty grey tail.
Male has mostly black head with yellow on auriculars and bare skin around eyes green with yellow and blue
Female lacks the yellow on auriculars and have a chestnut crown and rear neck.
Bill dark; upper mandible has a pale area above a diagonal from the lower tip to the upper base.

Central and South America:
Central America: found in Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama
South America: Colombia and northern Ecuador


This is a monotypic species.


Moist lowland forests, forest edges and montanes. Also secondary forests.


They often stay in dense vegetation.


These birds like the fruit of certain palm species.
