Alternative name: White-bellied Whistler (like Pachycephala leucogastra)!

Pachycephala arctitorquis



  • Black crown, side of head and hindneck
  • Grey upperparts
  • Dark brown upperwings and tail
  • Black band on upper breast
  • White rest of underparts
  • Red-brown eye
  • Black bill


  • Pale rusty brown upperparts
  • Whitish throat
  • Rusty cream underparts with fine dark streaking

Juveniles are similar to females.

Similar species

White-bellied Whistler is very similar but has a broader black breastband, a darker grey nape and some grey on flanks. The females of both species are very different.


Found on some islands in the Moluccas, Indonesia.
Common on Yamdena, status on other islands uncertain.


Forms a superspecies with Drab Whistler, Rufous Whistler, Black-headed Whistler and White-bellied Whistler and has been considered conspecific with the latter.


Clements recognises the following subspecies [1]:

  • P. a. kebirensis: Roma, Damar, Moa and Babar in the Eastern Lesser Sundas
  • P. a. arctitorquis: Yamdena, Larat, Lutu and Mutu in the Tanimbar Islands
  • P. a. tianduana: Tayandu


Moist lowland forests and mangrove forests. Also in plantations, villages and gardens.


Feeds on insects.
No information about breeding.
Resident species.
