Goura sclateri

Identification

75cm

  • Blue-grey plumage
  • White wing-patch, bordered above my maroon lesser and median coverts
  • Blue lacy crests
  • Red iris
  • Deep maroon breast becoming grey-blue on lower breast and belly
  • Sexes similar

Distribution

Southern New Guinea.
From Mimika River east to Fly River and Strickland River (maybe even to Hegigo River). Identity of birds between Fly River and Purari river unsure, either this species or Scheepmaker's Crowned Pigeon.

Taxonomy

Subspecies

This is a monotypic species.
Formerly considered conspecific with Scheepmaker's Crowned Pigeon under the name Southern Crowned Pigeon.

Habitat

Lowland forests.
