Identification

  • Blue-grey plumage
  • Blue lacy crests
  • Red iris
  • Deep maroon breast
  • Sexes similar

Distribution

Southern New Guinea.
Found along south coast of south-east New Guinea from Lakekamu Basin, Hall Sound and Mount Epa east to Orangerie Bay. Identity of birds between Fly River and Purari river unsure, either this species or Sclater's Crowned Pigeon.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species.
Formerly considered conspecific with Sclater's Crowned Pigeon under the name Southern Crowned Pigeon.

Habitat

Lowland forests.
