Overview

In the commune of Lussat, in the Creuse department of France, the natural reserve of L'Etang des Landes has a rich diversity of 950 species of flora and fauna, including 240 bird species and 480 plant species.

Notable Species

Over 60 species of bird breed on the site including the Purple Heron alongside the Black-crowned Night Heron, Little Egret, Cattle Egret and White Stork . Also a rare breeder for this region is the Sedge Warbler. Many others, like the Osprey, the Common Crane and many small waders, winter or make a stop-over on their long migrations.

Other Wildlife

L’Etang des Landes has the greatest diversity of dragonflies in the Limousin region, with more than 40 species. Included in this number is the sucessful breeding of the relatively rare Yellow-winged Darter (Sympetrum flaveolum).

The Northern Crested Newt (Triturus cristatus) has colonised various ponds on the reserve. At dusk in spring the singing of the European Tree Frog (Hyla arborea) can be heard.

L’Etang des Landes is also home to the European Otter (Lutra lutra)

Amongst the reserve's large bat population is the now threatened Barbastelle (Barbastella barbastellus).
