Pyrrhula erythaca

Identification

15–17 cm (6-6¾ in)
Slightly hooked bill and grey head.
Black mask. White rump and greyish wing bar. Black band on back. Iris dark brown. Bill black. Feet pinkish-brown.
Male has orange breast and belly.
Female has only a slight orange markings on a light brown breast and belly.

Distribution

Asia: found in China, Tibet, Inner Mongolia, Nepal, India, Eastern Himalayas, Bhutan,
Southeast Asia: Indochina, Myanmar

Taxonomy

Subspecies

There are 2 subspecies[1]:

  • P. e. erythaca:
  • P. e. wilderi:
  • North-eastern China (Liaoning)

Habitat

Subalpine conifer and mixed forest. In Taiwan lives above 2500 and often is seen in alpine meadows.

Behaviour

Diet

Their diet consists almost entirely of seeds and buds also willow catkins and sea buckthorn.
