Eastern Europe: found in Russia, Siberia, Turkestan, Kazakhstan, Mongolia
Asia: China, Tibet, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, India, Assam
Southeast Asia: Indochina, Myanmar



There are 5 subspecies[1]:

  • E. g. decolorata:
  • Western China (foothills of w Tarim Basin in Xinjiang)
  • E. g. godlewskii:
  • E. g. khamensis:
  • Tibet to western Sichuan and southern Qinghai
  • E. g. yunnanensis:
  • South-eastern Tibet to northern Myanmar, northern Yunnan, north-eastern Sichuan and western Hubei
  • E. g. omissa:
  • Southern Mongolia to Hubei, Shaanxi and nw Sichuan


Forest eges, rockly slopes with bushes and river sides.



Their diet consists mostly of grass seeds.
