12·7–13·5 cm (5-5¼ in)

  • Brown olive above
  • Pale yellow belly
  • White throat
  • Brown breast
  • 2 pale buff wing-bars
  • Flat bill, black upper mandible and a yellow lower mandible


Caribbean and South America:
Caribbean: Lesser Antilles and Trinidad
South America: Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and Argentina.


This is a polytypic species[1] consisting of 5 subspecies:


  • L. e. flaviventris:
  • L. e. lawrencei:
  • L. e. bolivianus:
  • L. e. argentinus:
  • L. e. euleri:
  • South-eastern Brazil to north-eastern Argentina; winters to Peru, Bolivia and Brazil

An additional subspecies johnstonei is generally considered to be invalid[2].


Woodland, humid forest, secondary growth, open forest borders, often near bamboo.



The diet includes insects, beetles, bugs, ants, cicadas and spiders.
