26–29 cm (10¼-11½ in); long tail and wings

  • Dark brown plumage
  • Pale diagonal bars across secondary coverts
  • Long pointed tail
  • Hooked black bill
  • Black legs and feet


Azores to Cape Verde Islands, Johnston and north-western Hawaiian islands.


This is a monotypic species[1].


Pelagic; breeds in rocky holes or under thick vegetation.


Nocturnal. Flies low over the sea.


The diet consists of plankton, squid and small fish which are picked from the surface in flight.
