- Mecocerculus hellmayri
Identification
11 cm
Grey crown and sides of head with a slight whitish supercilium. Underside whitish with grey wash on sides of breast and flanks and yellow wash more centrally. Upperside mostly greenish olive with hint of tawny on rump. Wings have pale buff wing bars and flight feathers show buffy-yellow edges.
Similar species
Tawny-rumped Tyrannulet is slightly darker and seems to prefer higher elevation than the present species
Distribution
South America: found on the eastern slope of Andes of southern Peru (Puno) to western Bolivia and north-western Argentina.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
Subspecies M. h. argentinus is generally considered invalid[2].
Habitat
Cloudforest with moss, podocarpus, and similar high elevation humid forests. Mainly elevations 1400-2200 m asl.
Behaviour
Often in mixed species flocks but not with other members of its species when feeding.
Vocalizations
A whistle incresing in pitch is given in series of four.
