Identification

35cm.

• Mostly green with light barring
• Some dull red on the forehead and lores, belly, and upper tail.

Distribution

South America: found in Chile, Argentina and Patagonia.

Taxonomy

Subspecies^[1]

There are 2 subspecies

• E. f. minor:

• Southern Chile ( Colchagua to Aysén) and adjacent Andes of south-western Argentina

• E. f. ferrugineus:

• Nothofagus forests of extreme southern Chile and southern Argentina

Habitat

Forests and open woodland, shrubby areas, farmland in mountain foothils.

Behaviour

Diet

The diet includes small fruit (particularly cherries), grass and bamboo seeds and nuts. Part of the foraging takes place on the ground after for example dandelion seeds.

Breeding

It nests in holes in trees.
