History and Use

Aruba is a small (19.6 x 6 miles), windy, hot, arid southern Caribbean island about 15 miles north of the Venezuelan coast. Although it is located in the southern Caribbean, its bird fauna is more similar to that of Venezuela than the rest of the Caribbean.

Areas of Interest

  • Bubali Bird Sanctuary, locally known as Bubali Plas
  • Arikok National Park
  • Tierra de Sol Salina
  • Orangestad Reef Islands IBA
  • San Nicolas Bay
  • Spaans Lagoon

Importantly, several of the above locations are nesting sites for sensitive species such as terns, and visits should be avoided during nesting season.
