Hylopezus whittakeri

Identification

14cm.

  • Grey to olive-grey crown and nape
  • Buff lores and ochraceous eyering
  • Black and buff streaked olivaceous auriculars
  • Black malar stripe
  • Olive-brown upperparts with two faint tawny or buff wingbars and black primary coverts with small tawny patch on base of primaries
  • White breast washed buff and with short black streaks
  • Clear white belly
  • Ochraceous buff flanks and crissum

Sexes alike, juveniles undescribed.

Distribution

South-central Amazonian Brazil, between the Madeira and the Xingu river.
Uncommon and local.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species.
Formerly included in Spotted Antpitta.

Habitat

Moist lowland forests.
Found in humid terra firme forest, often around treefalls and along streams. Below 500m.

Behaviour

Diet

Feeds on insects.
Usually singly, sometimes in pairs. Hops or runs on the ground, flicking aside leaves to catch insects.

Breeding

No information on breeding or nests.

Movements

Presumably a sedentary species.
