Two subspecies recognized:
- C. l. ludovicensis in the montane forests of west Angola
- C. l. whytei in the montane forests of northeast Zambia and west Malawi (Nyika Plateau)
whytei is split by IOC as Whyte's Double-collared Sunbird.
This is one of the many Sunbirds that have recently been moved to the genus Cinnyris from the genus Nectarinia.

Behaviour
Diet includes mainly nectar, but takes some fruit, and, especially when feeding young, insects and spiders.
