Overview

Mon is a small island off the south-east corner of Zealand.

Birds

Notable Species

It is famous throughout Denmark as a migration watchpoint, particularly in spring when birds such as Bluethroat, Turtle Dove and Red-footed Falcon regularly occur. Lesser White-fronted Goose sometimes occurs on passage in small numbers.

In addition there are interesting breeding birds such as Barred Warbler and Icterine Warbler, Red-backed Shrike and Golden Oriole.

Ulvshale Peninsula

The Ulvshale Peninsula [Map]on the northern tip of Mon has woodland and marshes with Ruff and Dunlin, Northern Shoveler and Garganey and beaches that are excellent for passage waders. Often seen here are the Pied Avocet that breed on nearby Nyord Island, along with Greylag Goose, Northern Pintail and Black-tailed Godwit.

Mons Klint

In the east of the island at Mons Klint [Map]there are Peregrine Falcon on steep chalk cliffs, a rare habitat in Denmark, and the woodland and scrub nearby have Barred Warbler and Golden Oriole, also Red-breasted Flycatcher and Greenish Warbler in spring.

Busene

The woodlands at Busene [Map]and Busene Have have Common Rosefinch and Golden Oriole.

Ostmon

In Ostmon the lake at Busemarke Mose [Map] has wetland warblers and Thrush Nightingale, often Spotted Crake and Bearded Reedling.

Access and Facilities

Mon lies only two hours by road south of Copenhagen.
