Similar Species
It can be distinguished from the similar Cook's Petrel by Masatierra's distinctive gray half-collar, much heavier bill and white ear surround accenting a dark eye-patch. Also note stockier appearance and broader wings of Masatierra.
Distribution
Chile; breeds on Robinson Crusoe (formerly) and Juan Fernandez, San Ambrosio and San Felix Islands, forages in the Humboldt Current.
Taxonomy
Monotypic.
Habitat
Open seas and rocky shores.
Behaviour
Usually a pelagic species. They are usually seen sweeping rapidly through the air in high arcs well offshore.
