- Machaeropterus deliciosus
Identification
13cm
- Red head
- Grey upperparts.
Distribution
South America: found only on the western slope of the Andes of south-western Colombia and western Ecuador.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
Habitat
Cloud forest.
Behaviour
Diet
The clutch consists of 2 eggs which are incubated for 18-21 days.
Vocalisation
One feather on each wing is ridged. A neighboring feather has a curved stiff tip. The two feathers vibrate against each other when raised over the head, producing a high-pitched whirring, or beeping sound. This seems to be the climax of the male display, it leans forward so that the head is low and the tail straight back, holds its wings vertical and vibrate them.
