Identification

15 cm.

  • Brown crown and upperparts with dark streaks
  • Brown wing and tail feathers with buff edges
  • White tips on wing-coverts forming two indistinct wingbars
  • Grey throat
  • Buff underparts

Sexes similar. Juvenile undescribed.

Distribution

Western, central and southern Mongolia and north-central China. Exact distribution poorly known.
Probably a rare species but possibly just overlooked due to its secretive behaviour. In China possibly only a non-breeding visitor.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species.
Proposed subspecies tenella (Western Mongolia) and pallida (southern Altai) are usually not recognized.
Forms a superspecies with Black-throated Accentor.
