Widespread throughout sub-Saharan Africa:
Western Africa: Mauritania, Senegal, The Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, Mali, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Nigeria, Niger, Chad, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Congo, Angola
Eastern Africa: Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania
Taxonomy
Formerly a part of African Yellow White-eye.
Subspecies
Seven subspecies recognized[1]:
- Z. s. senegalensis: Senegal to Uganda, northern Congo, northern Eritrea and north-western Ethiopia
- Z. s. demeryi: Sierra Leone to Liberia and Ivory Coast
- Z. s. kasaicus: Central Zaire (Kasai) to north-eastern Angola
- Z. s. heinrichi: North-western Angola (Cuanza Norte and Cuanza Sul)
- Z. s. quanzae: Central Angola (Malanje to central highlands)
- Z. s. gerhardi: Extreme southern South Sudan and northeastern Uganda
- Z. s. jacksoni: Highlands of Kenya and northern Tanzania (Loliondo)
Habitat
A wide variety of habitats, including forests, moist savanna, and dry shrubland.
Behaviour
Diet
Their diet consists mostly of seeds, supplemented by insects during the breeding season.
