Identification
17cm.
Male
- Rufous-chestnut back and tail
- Black crown
- Streaked and barred black and white underparts and sides of head
- Dark iris
- Grey bill, legs and feet
Female: similar, rufous-chestnut crown
Distribution
Two separate populations: coastal eastern Brazil; and from just south of the Amazon River in estern Brazil to Bolivia and Peru.
Taxonomy
Four subspecies are recognized[1]:
- T.p. similis:
- Eastern slope of Andes of central Peru (Huánuco and Junín)
- T.p. puncticeps:
- T.p. palliatus:
- Brazil south of River Amazon and coastal north-eastern Brazil (Paraíba to northern Bahia)
- T.p. vestitus:
- Coastal eastern Brazil (southern Bahia to Rio de Janeiro)
Habitat
Forest edges, secondary woodland, bamboo, parks, gardens.
Behaviour
It builds a cup nest from twigs.
