Identification
15 cm (6 in). A small, black-and-white monarch.
- Black head to nape, neck side, chin and throat
- White mantle, back and scapulars
- Black upperwing, rump, uppertail-coverts and tail
- White underparts
- Black undertail-coverts
- Blue bill
- Dark grey to greyish-blue legs
Females are almost entirely black with a broad white collar from the upper breast to the neck.
Juveniles are browner with rufous-brown upperparts, a greyer head and blackish wings and tail.
Distribution
Endemic to islands of Yap, Federated States of Micronesia.
A common and widespread restricted-range species.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
Habitat
All forest types including mangroves.
Behaviour
A poorly known species.
Diet
No information on diet. Forages in forest. Does not use fluttering techniques like other pied monarchs.
