Distribution
South America: found in Peru, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, Chile and Argentina
Taxonomy
Caatinga Black Tyrant was formerly included in this species.
Subspecies
Three subspecies:
- K. a. heterogyna:
- North Peru (Marañón Valley in Cajamarca, La Libertad and Ancash)
- K. a. anthracinus:
- Andes of Peru (Ayacucho, Cuzco, Puno) and western Bolivia (La Paz)
- K. a. aterrimus:
Habitat
Scrubby areas, woodland and forest borders. Generally in dry and semi-dry regions.
Behaviour
They normally perch in an upright position in the open, though occasionally more into the canopy.
Diet
Their main diet consists of insects.
